a year on from winning queen bee 2015, we caUGHT up with brooke

Last year you entered Queen Bee & went on to win it! Can you tell us why you decided to enter and what the Queen Bee cause means to you?

"The main reason I entered Queen Bee was to raise awareness for the cause. I think Matthews passing took everyone by surprise, and it was something that the scene could come together on and help. I feel events like this show just how close the scene truly is and when times get tough, how strong we really are."

How would you best describe your style, act & what are where you draw influences from?

"The word ghetto, is usually the easiest word to describe my style. I tend to stay clear of, pretty and girly. Its just not me. To me, if a drag queen can make you laugh, then they are doing the job well. Comedy is a massive part of my character. Making people laugh is what has kept my passion for drag as strong as it is today."

What did it feel like to win Queen Bee?

"Winning Queen Bee was an amazing feeling! I mean, who doesn't like to win?! It made me feel like im doing something right and gave me a new perspective on my drag career."

So you won but out of last years other contestants, who on the night really stood out for you?

"This is going to sound generic but, everyone last year was amazing. I have done competitions before and seen some...interesting entries, but last year was a strong set of talented queens. But... im always amazed by what Uma brings to the stage. She's my best friend and drag sister too."

What would you say to somebody who is thinking about entering the competition?

"To the people are thinking about entering.. all I say is 'Why think about it Just do it. You have nothing to lose, and even if you don't win, the experience can only benefit you if this is something you have a passion for; Don't let anyone tell you you cant do it, put everything you can into your performance and show Leeds just what your made of. Oh and, making people laugh is always a good start."

How did you first get involved with the Drag Art form?

"I started drag in 2011 at Drag Idol Leeds. I had seen the previous years and worked around many talented queens, and wanted to give it a go. I am obsessed with Britney Spears, so performing 'Till The World Ends' was my ideal beginning. I came 2nd, which only increased my passion for drag. And 5 years later, here she is."

You will be at Queen Bee 2016 this year, what are you looking forward to the most?

"Contestants!! There is always a huge scope of talent around and its so exciting to see a variety of styles compete. That's the great thing about drag, you never know whats going to happen."

Finally, where can people see you perform at the moment?

"I decided last year that I needed to take some time out to figure out where I wanted to take my life and career. And I have recently rejoined The Viaduct Starlets, every Monday for Kandyfloss at The Viaduct Showbar. I am so excited to be back home and on stage with 3 of the hardest working girls I have ever seen."

thank you to Brooke!
